Excerpt from my first book 'Lagom Lady, 7 aspects of balanced life I learned from Swedish women, Uyen Tifi, 2023.
"I have been surprised many times to see Nordic men enjoy the color pink, even though they are not homosexual. Sweden is known as the most gender-equal country in the world, starting from the moment a child is born. Children are encouraged to explore the world based on their natural interests, rather than their gender. You will find many girls playing with toy trucks and many boys playing with dolls in kindergarten. As children grow older, many boys enjoy learning sewing and cooking, while girls may prefer woodworking and household skills.
So, let's stop the prejudice about colors and a child's gender. Let's allow children the freedom to choose toys and hobbies regardless of their gender."
In the realm of parenting, certain gender stereotypes have persisted for generations, dictating what colors, toys, and activities are considered appropriate for boys and girls. Blue has been traditionally associated with boys, while pink has been linked to girls.
However, in today's modern world, where inclusivity and diversity are celebrated, it's time to challenge these outdated concepts. Let's explore this topic through the lens of a Swedish parenting expert, where progressive parenting practices aim to break free from limiting gender norms and promote equality and individuality.
#1 - Shifting Perspectives in Swedish Parenting
Swedish parenting experts embrace a progressive approach that prioritizes the individuality of each child, rather than adhering to rigid gender stereotypes. They encourage parents to view their children as unique individuals with their own interests, passions, and personalities, irrespective of their gender.
Instead of imposing societal norms of gendered colors and toys, Swedish parents are encouraged to provide an environment that fosters exploration and discovery. This means offering a diverse range of toys and activities, regardless of traditional gender associations, to allow children to choose what genuinely interests them.
#2 - Creating Gender-Neutral Spaces
Swedish parenting experts advocate for gender-neutral spaces that promote equality and inclusivity. Nurseries, playrooms, and classrooms are designed to encourage collaborative play and shared experiences. Instead of segregating toys based on gender, these spaces are filled with a variety of toys, colors, and activities that appeal to all children.
By providing a gender-neutral environment, Swedish parents are fostering a sense of acceptance, where boys and girls can play, learn, and grow together without the burden of stereotypes influencing their interactions.
#3 - Encouraging Free Expression
In Sweden, parents prioritize the freedom of expression for their children. This means allowing boys and girls to express their emotions and interests without judgment or restriction. Whether a child is drawn to sports, arts, science, or fashion, Swedish parenting experts emphasize the importance of nurturing their passions without conforming to traditional gender norms.
By encouraging free expression, parents empower their children to develop a strong sense of self-identity and self-worth, uninhibited by societal expectations.
#4 - Challenging Gender Norms in Toys and Clothing
Swedish parents are at the forefront of challenging gender norms in toys and clothing choices. They opt for gender-neutral clothing options for young children, avoiding limiting color palettes or designs.
In terms of toys, Swedish parenting experts encourage a wide array of playthings that cater to various interests, regardless of gender. Boys can play with dolls and girls can explore building blocks without feeling limited by societal expectations.
In the journey towards gender equality, Swedish parenting experts are leading the way by challenging traditional gender stereotypes and embracing progressive practices. By creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, they enable children to grow and thrive as individuals, free from the constraints of gender norms. Let's take inspiration from Swedish parenting approaches and foster a world where children can express themselves authentically, breaking free from the limiting concept of "blue for boys, pink for girls."
