What is Lagom in Asian women perspective?

Lagom is a Swedish term that loosely translates to "just the right amount" or "in moderation." It is a concept deeply rooted in Swedish culture, emphasizing balance, simplicity, and sustainability in various aspects of life. While Lagom is traditionally associated with Scandinavian culture, it can be interesting to explore its interpretation from an Asian women's perspective.

In Asian cultures, women often face societal expectations and pressures that can be overwhelming. There is a common pursuit of perfection in various realms of life, including academics, careers, relationships, and appearance. The pressure to excel and meet societal standards can lead to stress, burnout, and a sense of imbalance. In this context, the idea of Lagom can provide valuable insights and a fresh perspective.

For Asian women, embracing Lagom can mean finding harmony and contentment in their lives by avoiding extremes and striving for moderation. It involves finding a balance between work and personal life, setting realistic goals, and prioritizing self-care. Rather than chasing unattainable ideals, Lagom encourages Asian women to focus on their own well-being and cultivate a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

#1 - In terms of career

Lagom may mean striving for professional success while also recognizing the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It encourages Asian women to set boundaries, manage their time effectively, and avoid overcommitting themselves. By finding the right amount of work and leisure, they can prevent burnout and enjoy a fulfilling career without sacrificing their personal lives.

#2 - In relationships

Lagom can guide Asian women towards healthier dynamics. It promotes open communication, respect for boundaries, and shared responsibilities. Instead of conforming to societal expectations of submissive or self-sacrificing behavior, Lagom encourages women to find an equal partnership based on mutual support, trust, and compromise.

#3 - In beauty and self-image

Lagom can influence the perception of beauty and self-image among Asian women. It encourages them to embrace their natural appearance, practice self-acceptance, and prioritize self-care. Rather than striving for unattainable beauty standards, Lagom promotes a holistic approach to beauty that emphasizes inner well-being, self-confidence, and self-expression.

In my own interpretation, the essence of Lagom lies in understanding extremes and discovering a harmonious middle ground. Unlike minimalism, Lagom doesn't prescribe rigid boundaries. Instead, it emphasizes the notions of balance, equity, and finding a personalized sense of "just enough." What constitutes sufficiency for one individual may not align with another's needs, and what is considered balanced at one stage of life might differ at another. Sufficient knowledge about Lagom enables proactive engagement. Ultimately, it is you who determines what is enough and what constitutes balance for your own journey.

In summary, from an Asian women's perspective, Lagom represents a refreshing approach to life, one that encourages balance, contentment, and moderation. It offers an alternative to the high-pressure, perfectionistic culture that can often be overwhelming. By adopting Lagom principles, Asian women can find harmony in various aspects of their lives, fostering personal growth, well-being, and a sense of fulfillment.
